Rudy Winkler, the defending Trials champion, broke Lance Deal’s 25-year-old American record in the biggest competition in U.S. hammer throwing history when, on his second attempt, he landed the 16-pound orb out at 82.71m/271-4, a personal best by seven inches.

Winkler opened the tournament by throwing an 80.75m/264-11, which was far over the previous Trials mark established by Jud Logan in 1992.
Five of his six throws were above 80 metres (262 feet), including a personal best of 82.10 metres (269 feet) in the fourth round. His new world record throw put him in the top 20 of all-time global performers.
In addition to Winkler’s peak performance, Daniel Haugh both set personal bests in the final round to earn their maiden Olympic berths.
Haugh now throws a 79.39m/260-5, whereas Young’s best effort went at 78.32m/256-11. With Winkler as the team’s gold medal favourite, these three athletes form the best men’s hammer team.
The last American to win Olympic gold in the event was Hal Connolly in 1956, while the last American medallist was Deal, who won silver in Atlanta in 1996.
Winkler smashes a 25-year-old national record to secure a prestigious seat in Tokyo.
