In the final round of the women’s 10m platform diving competition at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Chinese diver Quan Hongchan displayed perfection with two dives that received perfect scores of 10 from all seven judges.

Quan, who turned 14 in March and is the youngest competitor representing China in Tokyo, entered the pool without making an impact despite looking like a seasoned pro from her perch atop the platform.

She smashed the previous Olympic record of 447.70 with a score of 466.20 in her first major international competition, and she won the gold. The latest Olympic diving champion to hail from China did it to help assist her ailing mother, who needs care 365 days a year.

In the second round, Quan performed her first ever flawless dive, a tucked-inward 3.5 somersault.

In Round 4, she added another perfect score by performing a back double somersault with 1.5 twists from a handstand, and in Round 5, she completed her routine with a back piked 2.5 somersault with 2.5 twists dive, which was evaluated by all but one judge as a perfect 10.

Quan won every round of diving with a perfect score of 50, while her nearest rival finished more than 40 points behind.

With Chen Yuxi’s silver medal, China now has ten diving medals from Tokyo, and Melissa Wu’s bronze, in only her fourth Olympic competition, is Australia’s first individual medal.

Delaney Schnell of the United States finished in fifth place after a dive performance that was decent but not as strong as her showings in the preliminary and semifinal rounds.
