At 10-1 in the VNL, the U.S. Women have clinched a spot in the Final Round, which will take place in Ankara, Turkey, from July 13-17. On Sunday at 1 p.m. PT, the United States will play their final match in the VNL versus Germany.

Each of Saturday’s five sets between the United States and Turkey was a close contest. Through most of the opening set, the United States’ starting five of Drews Robinson Tapp Haleigh Washington Jordyn Poulter and Kara Bajema were in control. Bajema led the Americans with six points on five kills and one ace.

However, Turkey did not cave in. They went on a run in the middle of the second set, sparked by six points by Ebrar Karakurt, and cruised to a 25-18 victory.

At 24-21, Turkey was up a set and had a chance to win the match. The score was 24-24 following an error by Turkey, an ace by Poulter, and a kill by Drews. At 25-24, Türkiye prevented the United States from achieving a set point, but at 26-25, the Americans won the match after successfully challenging a block touch.

The fourth set was tied at 19 before Karakurt’s huge kill put Turkey ahead by two at 21-19. After going behind by a break, the United States was unable to come back and won by a score of 25-23.

In a perfect volleyball match, the fifth set would have all the elements listed above. Fantastic sets, incredible kills, and jaw-dropping blocks. When Drews served at 12-10, Turkey had been ahead by three points for the most of the match.

At 12-all, Drews served two aces in a row that completely shifted the tide of the game. At 14-13 with Turkey in the lead, Robinson’s kill brought the score back to 14-14.

At 15-14 and 16-15, the United States had match points, but each time, Turkey came back and won. Tapp then blocked Karakurt spectacularly to seal the win for the United States with two seconds remaining and the score at 17-16.

Drews said that “it clearly wasn’t a nice match, but we got the done.” I think we did a fantastic job as a unit of stepping on the gas when we needed to, and I was impressed with the work of our passers tonight.

It’s always exciting to take on Turkey, and games that go the distance help us grow as a team. There’s a lot to look forward to, and I think there’s just as much we can improve upon.

Twenty kills, one block, and three aces led to 24 points for Drews in the match’s final tally. With 26 points on 24 kills and 2 aces, she was second only to Bajema. Tapp had six points (four blocks, two kills) while Washington had 11 points (ten kills, one ace). Robinson had 21 points (19 kills, two aces).

Poulter managed to pull an ace out of the deck. Justine Wong Orantes, who plays libero, had 17 digs, the most of any player.
