The twenty-year-bronze old’s medal performance ended Ghana’s Olympic medal drought, which had lasted since the Barcelona Games in 1992.

For Ghana, this is the fourth Olympic boxing medal, joining those won by Clement Quartey in 1960 (silver), Eddie Blay in 1964 (bronze), and Prince Amartey in 1972 (bronze).

Both boxing semi-finalists who lose in the finals receive bronze medals at the Olympics, so regardless of the outcome of S. Takyi match, he will still win a medal.

As the American Who Won the Opening Round indicates, S. Takyi Got Off to a Sluggish Start.

While the Ghanaian did manage to come back in the second round, similar to his quarterfinal bout against Colombia’s Avila Sagura, he was caught by Ragan many times in the third round, which was a slugfest that neither fighter was able to completely control.

Unfortunately for the child from Atukpai in Accra, the battle was scored 4-1 in favour of the American, ruining S. Takyi and Ghana’s hopes for a first-ever gold medal..

Last Words

In the first Olympic medal for Ghana in 29 years, S. Takyi won his quarterfinal to secure the gold at Tokyo 2020.

In the quarterfinals, S. Takyi defeated the far more experienced Colombian southpaw David Ceiber Avila, 32, capturing two of three rounds to the delight of the Ghanaian fans in the grandstand.

Celebrations like this were happening all around Ghana on this historic day in the ring, and they’re certain to grow much louder as S. Takyi advances to the semi-finals, where he’ll fight Ragan Duke of the United States.
