On the same day, World No. 1 men’s player Rafael Nadal announced that he would not be participating.

According to the Japan Tennis Association, the International Tennis Federation informed them that the three Japanese players were among those given spots in the Olympic tournament based on their ATP or WTA singles rankings as of June 14.

Nadal, winner of two Olympic gold medals, said through Twitter that he will not be competing in either the Tokyo Games or Wimbledon because he had been “listening to my body and discuss(ing) with my team.”

Osaka, at 23, and Nishioka, at 25, are the youngest athletes to ever compete in the Olympics.

K. Nishikori will Compete in his Fourth Consecutive

K. Nishikori, now 31 years old, will compete in his fourth consecutive Summer Olympics, matching Ai Sugiyama’s Japanese record for most Olympic appearances by a tennis player.

The 2016 Olympic bronze medal match against Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal was his best Olympic performance.

A total of 86 men and 86 women are allowed to participate in the games. There will be a total of 64 competitors in the men’s and women’s singles draws, with 56 of them being direct entrants.

K. Nishikori, who is now ranked 57th in the world, can still qualify for the Olympics because certain countries have more than the allotted number of athletes ranked in the top 56.

All matches at the Olympic tennis tournament, to be held at Ariake Tennis Park from July 24 to August 1, will be best-of-three sets.
