You could call E. Dershwitz, a former Harvard athlete, a “sabre” toothed tiger when it comes to the impending 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The 24-year-old sabre fencer from Sherbon is currently ranked No. 1 in the world (as of 2018), and he competed in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (also spelled saber).
The fact that Dershwitz is the youngest ranked sabre practitioner in the world’s top 25 adds spice.

In spite of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, Dershwitz is practising as if the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which will feature competition in epee, foil, and sabre, will be held on schedule, if at all.
The sabre, a curved military weapon, saw considerable use during the Napoleonic Wars. Fencing is a more disciplined, arduous, and cerebral sport than it is often portrayed in movies and on television,
where actors like Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone duel and leap one-handed off balustrades one-handed, or where heroes like Zorro leap from balconies with foils in hand to escape to fight another day.
In modern competitive sabre, the blade is straighter and thinner. Still, E. Dershwitz has the makings of a classic action hero from any age.
E. Dershwitz, who is left-handed and typically weighs 175 pounds, stated, “My instructor (Zoran Tulum) emphasised to me long ago that it’s actually a game of mental chess.” I
n my opinion, there is a lot more originality and attention to detail involved than is commonly believed. You need lightning quick feet and an explosive arm.
If you’re quick on your feet, you can force your opponent to miss. In the event of a simultaneous blow to the head, the referee will award the point to the player who is making the more forward progress.
E. Dershwitz coach on Team USA, Tulum, is originally from Belgrade, Serbia. From 1985–1987, he worked as an assistant coach at Harvard, and from 1987–1998 he did the same thing at Stanford. Zeta Fencing is now managed by Tulum in Natick.
E. Dershwitz involvement in the sport was obviously fostered by his family. His older brother Phil was a fencer at Princeton, so E. Dershwitz and his twin sister Sally went along to a summer camp where they could participate in fencing for fun.
E. Dershwitz Career in Sports
E. Dershwitz career in sports has taken off like a rocket. He became the youngest person ever to win a senior men’s sabre national championship in the United States when he earned the title in 2014.
The following year, in 2015, he won the World Junior Fencing Championship and made history as the first American male sabre fencer to ever hold a world title.
In addition to his 2017 Maccabiah Games gold, he has four individual Pan American Championship gold medals under his belt.
E. Dershwitz claims that taking silver at the 2018 World Championships in Wuxi, China, is his proudest achievement to date. The South Korean player Kim Jung-Hwan was his opponent in the championship match, which he won by a score of 15-11.

E. Dershwitz beat Aron Szilagyi of Hungary, a two-time Olympic champion (in 2012 and 2016) and former European title winner, 15-11 to go to the medal round.
