Even though the COVID pandemic was growing, the Copa America 2021 began on Sunday, the 13th. No one knew for sure if the event would be held or if all ten CONMEBOL countries would show up at the last minute to play in Brazil as hosts.

The Albiceleste have been laden with talent as usual, and they have looked fairly unified, so they should be in the final in Rio despite Lionel Messi playing more like a Barcelona player than an Argentinian player.
Uruguay’s young prospects are lifting the squad despite an elderly defence and attack, giving the team’s veteran players a shot at the playoffs.
Paraguay shocked Chile by moving up the rankings and avoiding a matchup with Brazil in the quarterfinals. Their defence has been solid, making them an uphill opponent.
The only reason Chile advanced to the next round was because they defeated a hopeless Bolivian team. But with so many grizzled veterans in the mix, anything is conceivable.
Brazil came in first in Group B, followed by Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador.
Brazil are the clear favourites to win the tournament and add to their already impressive collection of trophies. Tite’s squad is still undefeated since their 2018 World Cup loss to Belgium, but they’ll be taking on a tough Chilean team in their next match.
The success Peru has had in major tournaments in recent years means it should come as no surprise that they finished second in Group B despite being blown out by Brazil.
Several observers have pointed out that James Rodriguez’s presence in the centre of Colombia’s spacious 4-2-3-1 formation would have relieved some of the creative pressure on Juan Cuadrado.
In Ecuador, you have a speedy and disciplined team that has been tough to beat, but they’ll likely be eliminated after this match against Argentina.
