Evans was an absolute machine in the pool in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, winning gold in the 400-meter individual medley, 400-meter freestyle, and 800-meter freestyle.

In the 400- and 800-meter freestyle events, she set new world records in both and finished about three metres ahead of her closest competitor in both.

Protecting her Position as a Leader

Evans had a six-year unbeaten streak in the 400-meter event going into the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. But in the last laps, she was grabbed and finished second, losing by by 30 centimetres.

After a disappointing performance in the 400m, Evans righted the ship two days later in the 800m, when she led from start to finish and successfully defended her championship by eight metres.

Enduring Success

From 1986 until 1995, Janet Evans dominated the 400-meter distance, winning 25 of 27 major international events and 22 of 23 800-meter races. Her 800 metre freestyle world record stood for four Olympic Games before being surpassed in Beijing in 2008.

The Hungarian backstroke champion is Krisztina Egerszegi Krisztina. She competed in the Olympic Games in 1988, 1992, and 1996, and she won the gold medal in the 200-meter backstroke every time.

When she won the 200-meter backstroke at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, she set a record as the youngest swimmer to ever win an Olympic gold medal at the age of 14.

She joined Dawn Fraser as only the second woman to win an individual swimming gold medal at three consecutive Olympic Games.
